Black holes can form during the course of stellar evolution. When nuclear fuel is exhausted in the core of a star, the pressure associated with the heat it produces is no longer sufficient to prevent the core from contracting due to its own gravity.
At densities greater than one million times that of water, a pressure due to the high electron density appears, which stops the contraction in a white dwarf. If the density is higher, it becomes a black hole.
